How do we know God isn't tempting us?

Question:
You said God doesn't tempt anyone, the devil is the temptor. I believe the devil tempts us. Could you explain Genesis 22:1 where it says God did tempt Abraham.
Answer:
The word translated 'tempt' can also mean 'test.' God does not dangle temptations in front of us to try to trip us up, but He does allow situations to come our way that are designed to test the depth and sincerity of our faith. This is what was happening in Genesis 22 when God told Abraham to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice. Some translations use the word 'test' instead of 'tempt.'
