Was this the soul of Samuel?

Question: King Saul consulted a woman with familiar spirits and was able to talk to Samuel? Is this the soul of Samuel talking to Saul? Even though what he said during the conversation was said by Samuel himself while he was yet alive, and the prophecy that he would die came true, and the devil does not know the future?
Answer: This is a difficult area of the Scriptures. We do not believe that it was the soul of Samuel, because we do not believe that people have a soul that exists independently in a state of consciousness after their death. We have a difficult time believing it was a demonic counterfeit, since the figure is specifically identified as Samuel himself. Perhaps another visitor to our web site could add some further thoughts.
