Am I a backslider?

Question: I haven't been to church in a while cause my car is broken. I still pray and repent and listen to preaching tapes etc. I plan to go as soon as I can get my car fixed, but I am so broke I often have to take care of other things. My taxes are coming soon and I plan to return. Am I considered a backslider? I don't feel it. As a matter of fact, I was going to go someplace with my sister and I felt so bad about it, it was conviction and I though oh good, I am convicted and I didn't go. I thought how wonderful, God has not left me nor forsaken me just like he said...even though some may assume I have left the church.

Answer: Proverbs 14:14 says, 'The backslider in heart will be filled with his own ways, but a good man will be satisfied from above.' The issue is not whether you have missed the meetings of the church due to car problems; it is whether or not you are full of your own ways. In contrast, the good man is said to be 'satified from above,' which means that he finds satisfaction in his relationship with God and finds it easy to be submissive toward the Master.

We have no way of knowing whether anyone at the local assembly considers you to be backslidden. We would think that you would have been in touch so that at least the leaders would know why you have not been there. We also cannot help but wonder why none of the brothers or sisters have offered to give you and your children a ride.
