Question: Can you please explain what Jesus meant in John 6:62 when He said, 'What if you see the Son of Man ascend to where He was before?'

Answer: The answer to this question is contained in the words that follow. In verse 63 Jesus goes on to say, 'It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing.' The context here is that some of the Lord's followers have deserted Him because of His 'hard sayings.' So Jesus is explaining that the whole process of coming to Him and becoming one of His followers is a spiritual work. In essence He is saying, 'The time will come when I will no longer operate on earth in the flesh (which ultimately profits nothing). At that time I will be here only as Spirit (which is able to give life). He reiterates this point when He says, 'Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father' (John 6:65).

If we put all of His words together in this sequence, it reads this way: 'What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before? It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. But there are some of you who do not believe. Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father' (John 6:62-65).
