Is giving less than a tithe a sin?

Question: Has giving less than 10% now become a sin. While we yet are Gentiles without God, we give according to our heart desires. Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the Gentiles, which neither the Jews were able to bear. Aren't you putting up a minimum amount for Gentiles to be good.

Answer: The principle you are drawing from has nothing to do with tithes. Paul was addressing the ceremonial apects of the Jewish religion which had been fulfulled in Jesus Christ, specifically circumcision and Sabbath-keeping. Tithing has to do with faith and has nothing to do with being good. None of us will ever be good enough to be saved. But once we are saved by the grace of God, we are expected to enter into the life of faith, not the life of doing whatever our heart desires. That is a trap which leads to destruction. Proverbs 28:26 says, 'He who trusts in his own heart is a fool.' We are therefore told in Proverbs 23:12, 'Apply your heart to instruction....'
