Question: I read your article on dating where you were answering some questions I particlaurly liked. I have read in the OT that once a male and a female had sexual intercousre it was considered as marriage in the eyes of God, whether or not they were married before. For example, Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob and Leah. What is your take on the matter?

Answer: Marriage has both spiritual and civil components. To believe that all a man and woman had to do to become married in the eyes of God was have sex is short-sighted. In fact, the Jews practiced a rather extensive marriage ceremony. Furthermore, Peter has written, 'Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake' (1 Peter 2:13). If a civil government requires the purchase of a marriage license and solemnizing by an authorized person, then that is what God expects a person to do. We are all answerable both to God and man.
