Galatians 4:26 says, 'The Jerusalem above is free, which is the mother of us all.' This is referring to the true church, the body of Christ. As it relates to an individual, it is the local assembly of which we are a part. In other words, God is our spiritual Father and the local church is our spiritual mother. Like it is in the natural realm, the father provides resources and oversight, but the mother does the hand-on, day-to-day care. The church is the spiritual Eve, the mother of all living (Genesis 3:20). God brings forth the spiritual conception, but the church brings forth and cares for the spiritual babies. This is why the church is also called the bride of Christ.
