Question: God is love in 1 John 4:8. John 17:14 and 14:31 says that the Father loves the Son and the Son loves the Father. If God is one and Jesus is that one God, how could it be that God remains one God? God is love and that love should have an object of love to give benefit to the other. The text says that it was a kind of love before the creation of the world. So we mean that it is an eternal love.

Answer: The Father is eternal Spirit whereas the Son is the man who was born. Even though the Son is the Father in the flesh, we can still make certain distinctions between the Father and the Son. It is in this regard that Jesus can speak of the love between the Father and the Son. He is telling us here that the connection between His humanity and His deity is not one based on law or domination; it is based fundamentally on love.

There are numerous occasions where the Bible seems to be separating the Father and the Son into two independent beings, especially in the Gospel of John. But we must be careful not to view these Scriptures as actually separating them, for as you said, God is one. The underlying purpose behind such verses is to give revelation; yet some read these verses and become confused. This is why we must always approach our study of the Bible prayerfully and with humility.
