Question:
In the verse below, where did the soul of the child come from? Does this mean the soul departs the body at death? 1 Kings 17:21 And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again. 22 And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.
Answer:
In this passage, the word 'soul' means life. It is the Hebrew word nephesh, which comes from the root meaning of to breathe. It indicates that the boy began to breathe again. The NIV says, 'Then he stretched himself out on the boy three times and cried to the LORD, 'O LORD my God, let this boy's life return to him!' 22 The LORD heard Elijah's cry, and the boy's life returned to him, and he lived.
