Since a biblical day begins at sunset (not at midnight), Jesus was probably placed in the tomb on the day of His death. If we take His statement in Matthew 12:40 literally that He would be buried for three days and three nights, then He must have been buried on Thursday evening just before sunset. This would make Thursday, Friday, and Saturday the 'days' and Thursday night, Friday night, and Saturday night the 'nights.'
