Question:
I've heard many people quote 'As a man thinketh in his heart so is he' as Scripture. I myself have never seen it in the Bible that way, but people say it is there. They say look at Proverbs 23:7. I've looked but don't see it. At the most the saying is an aphorism. What do you think ?
Answer:
Proverbs 23:7 says in part, 'For as he thinks in his heart, so is he...' (NJKV). If we look at it in context, it is part of a warning against associating too closely with greedy people. The warning starts with verse 1 and goes through 9. You might try reading it in a modern language vesrion such as the NIV or the Message. This might make the passage more clear.
The idea verse 7 is conveying is that people can put on pretenses for their own purposes, but in the end what they really are is determined by the thoughts and intents of the heart (see Hebrews 4:12).
This verse is an aphorism, but all biblical aphorisms are expressions of truth.
