In Genesis 22:5 the Bible says, And Abraham said to his young men, 'Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship and we will come back to you.' This is the first place the word 'worship' is found in the Bible. It shows us that worship is more than singing songs, raising hands, and praising God. This is part of it, but true worhip is more. It includes a total yieldness to the Lord, a willingness to do whatever He says even if the cost is high.
In John 4:23, Jesus said, 'But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.' Since there are true worshipers, there must also be false worshipers. In Matthew 15:8-9 Jesus said, 'These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me....' False worshipers only give God the external forms of worship whereas the true worshipers give Him their hearts as well. They worship in spirit and truth.
