When did God create man?

Question:
Genesis 1:27 says that God created people in his own image; God patterned them after himself; male and female he created them. Then it says it again in chapter 2:7 And the Lord God formed a man's body from the dust of the ground and breathed into it the breath of life and man became a living being. So was the first reference to God creating people, meaning the idea was there but he didn't actually create them until Chapter 2:7?
Answer:
The best way to think about this is that chapter 1 gives the broad view of creation, while chapter 2 gives a close-up shot. Chapter 1 tells us what God did, while chapter 2 describes Him actually doing it. These passages are not contradictory; the second is simply the detailed description of the first.
