Question:
In Proverbs 8, who is talking here. Who is he that the Lord possesseth at the beginning of his ways?
Answer:
Proverbs 8:12 says, 'I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge and discretion. Verse 22 says, 'The LORD possessed me at the beginning of His way, before His works of old.' Clearly the Lord possessed wisdom (Hebrew chokmah). Personification is a poetic literary device whereby an abstract concept (such as wisdom) is portrayed as having human characteristics. This is what is happening in Proverbs 8. God is describing His wisdom in ways that can be easily understood by most human beings.
