Question:
Can you please explain the verses below? They seem to suggest that not all believers who receive the Spirit speak in tongue but rather have different gifts? 1 Cor 12:10-11,30 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 11But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will...30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? 1 Cor 14:5 I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
Answer:
As many have done, you are confusing the gift (dorea) of the Holy Spirit with the gifts (charisma) of the Spirit. The verses you mentioned are explained in our article called 'Speaking in Tongues in the Church' found on Shelf 1 of the Apostolic Free Library on this website.
