Question: Romans 11:29 says, 'For the gifts and calling of GOD are without repentance.' In the Old Testament, was not the Spirit upon a person not in them. Will GOD take a gift back?

Answer: The passage you have quoted pertains to God's promises to the nation of Israel as a group, not to any individual. If a backslider prays back through, this is positive proof that the Spirit did not leave him. If the Spirit has left because God sees that a person has rejected Him and turned his back on Him, then that person will never be able to pray back through. No one comes to God unless the Spirit draws him.

We want to encourage you not to be careless or casual about backsliding. It is a very serious matter. We are promised a second birth if we respond to the gospel, but we are not promised a third or fourth birth. Once the Spirit leaves a person, that's it. There is no longer any hope for salvation. 1 John 5:16 says not to even pray for such a person. What could be more serious?
