Did the serpent lie to Eve?

Question:
It has been said that the serpent lied to Eve. I stated that he did not lie, he told the truth. I believe that in today's time we only give part of the truth and we decieve people because we are not walking in what God wants us to. Do you believe that the serpent lied?
Answer:
The serpent first said, 'Has God indeed said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of the garden'?' That was a question, not a lie. But it set the stage for the lie because it implied that God was depriving Eve of something good rather than protecting her from something dangerous. Then he said, 'You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.' That was an outright lie. Eve would die if she disobeyed God. In his mercy God did not take her life from her that very day, but to the Lord, a day is as a thousand years and a thousand years as a day. Eve eventually died for her sin. When people today say that there is no penalty for sin, they are telling the same lie. Yes, the devil lied to Eve. He has been a liar from the beginning, Jesus said.
