Question: I respectfully disagree with your answer regarding the question 'Can God forgive my adultery?' According to the Scripture Matthew 19:9, Jesus said, 'And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.' You stated 'now that you are married to him, you are no longer committing adultery as long as you are faithful to him. God does not expect you to return to your first husband.' There is nothing in the scripture to support your statement 'Now that you are married to him, you are no longer committing adultery... God does not expect you to return to your first husband'. According to Romans 7:2-3 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth ; but if the husband be dead , she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.

Answer: You certainly have a right to your own opinion, but the Scripture you quoted does not contradict our earlier response. We agree that a person who marries a divorced person is committing adultery. But we also believe that God can forgive even this sin. In addition, we believe it is never the will of God for a marriage to end in divorce, even if it started out completely wrong. God hates divorce, but He is merciful to those who confess and forsake their sins.
