Question: I am a lay elder in my church (southern baptist) and my pastor does not see that the lay eldership is biblical. As a result the pastor does not work with the elders as a team member. Results: loosing church members, division between members, lack of unity and harmony. Would it be biblical for me to ask that my name be removed as an elder for the greater unity of the body? I have heart issues, and the tension is overwhelming at times.

Answer: We don't care for the term 'lay elder' because we do not believe in the unbiblical division between the so-called clergy and laity. Nevertheless, if you have a heart issue and find yourself experiencing great stress over the situation, then we agree that you ought to step out of your role as a lay elder.
