Question:
Dear David Huston, (1 Corinthians 12: 11) NIV says, “It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.” QUESTION – If the Spirit decides who gets what gift … how can you as a man overrule the Spirit by teaching … all should speak in tongues? NOTE - You need to answer just this specific question and it should be answered according to God’s Word and not a ramification of your personal ideology. Respectfully submitted, a watchman of His Word P.S. '...One man sharpens another'
Answer:
You seem to be confusing the gift (Greek dorea)of the Holy Spirit with the gifts (Greek charisma) of the Spirit. We agree that God distributes the gifts (charisma) of the Spirit as He wills, but we also believe that when a person receives the gift (dorea) of the Holy Spirit, he will speak in tongues just like the people did on the day of Pentecost.
