Question: I had a transient ischemic attack ('mini stroke') years ago that caused me to temporarily be unable to speak. I could and did, however, pray in tongues. As I could not communicate what was going on to my husband and he did not realize what was happening (we were traveling along a remote, isolated stretch of interstate), I believe Jesus healed me of permanent damage. By the time I got to a doctor, there was nothing they could do for me; but Jesus undertook. I have considered this to be similar to what deaf-mute people must experience when they speak in tongues as the language did not come from my incapacitated speach center, but from somewhere else. I have always wondered if the heavenly language always bypasses the place in one's brain where speech originates. How do you see this?

Answer: In 1 Corinthians 14:14 Paul wrote, 'For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.' This suggests that there may be some validity to your idea that spiritual utterances bypass the brain (or mind) and come directly from God into the mouth. Thank you for sharing your personal experience.
