Why do you use the word 'merely'?

Question:
I have heard Apostolics use the word 'merely' that you mentioned in your response to argue in favor of wearing gold and fancy clothes. What do you think of that?
Answer:
We have not argued in favor of wearing gold and fancy clothes. Quite the contrary. The word 'merely' indicates that the outward appearance is inconsequential in comparison to the importance of properly adorning the inward man.
