Question:
Is it not so that 1 Cor 14:28 teaches the man to keep silence publicly, but that he is ok to privately speak to himself and to God in a church service if there is no interpreter? Similarily then, is it not so that 1 Cor 14:34 is for women to not speak publicly as well?
Answer:
The passages you have referenced are dealing with specific circumstances where it is inappropriate for certain persons to speak out in gatherings of a local assembly. These passages are dealing with decency and order, not church polity or the roles of men and women in the assembly. For a more thorough explanation of the passages you cite, please see our article 'The Role of Women in the Local assembly' in the Apostolic Free Library (www.gloriouschurch.com/html/Role-of-Women-in-Assembly.asp).
