Question:
Hebrews 8:13 says, 'In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.' What is this old covenant that is ready to vanish away?
Answer:
The Old Covenant was a system of connecting with God offered to Israel by means of ceremonial practices, all of which looked ahead to the coming of the Messiah. Once Messiah had come and offered a New Covenant to all mankind, the Old no longer served a purpose. Therefore, all of the ceremonial practices (sacrifices, circumcision, Sabbath keeping, holy days, etc.) were about to be done away with. God forced the issue in 70 AD when General Titus destroyed the Temple in Jerusalem.
