Can a person lose the Holy Ghost?

Question:
Say someone receives the Holy Ghost and then backslides, does the Holy Ghost leave you until you pray back through, or do you keep the Holy Ghost the rest of your life, no matter how you live?
Answer:
When Saul was appointed king of Israel, the Holy Spirit came upon him. Years later, when he rejected the words of God, the Bible says that God rejected him and removed His Spirit (see 1 Samuel 10:10; 15:26; and 16:14). After David sinned with Bathsheba, he prayed, 'Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me' (Psalms 51:11). Clearly the Holy Spirit sometimes departs from people because of their sins, their rebellion, and their rejection of God's authority in their lives. Proverbs 14:14 says, 'The backslider in heart will be filled with his own ways....' When a person is filled his own ways, it doesn't leave any room for God.
