Question:
If drinking is condemned in the Bible and no drunkard shall enter the Kingdom of God, why did Jesus turn water into wine at the wedding of Cana and why is wine okay to drink or use as a painkiller? Is drinking sometimes acceptable in the Bible?
Answer:
The issue with consuming alcoholic beverages is intoxication. God expects His people to be sober and to keep their thoughts under control (see 1 Thessalonians 5:6-8; 1 Peter 1:13). If a person wants to get drunk, he should get filled to overflowing with the Holy Spirit like they did on the day of Pentecost. That's the only drunkenness that allows a person to at the same time be sober-minded.
