Question: In Mathew3:16-17, As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” 1. Why did the Spirit of God alight on Jesus like a dove? 2. Did others aside from John the baptist see this vision?

Answer: John 1:32-34 says, And John bore witness, saying, 'I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. 33 I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' 34 And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.'

This passage indicates that the purpose of the Spirit appearing in the form of a dove was as a sign to John the Baptist. The Bible does not tells us whether anyone else was able to see the dove.
